Garibald

Garibald, born in the year six hundred sixty-five, was the young son of Grimoald I of Benevento, a prominent king of the Lombards. His lineage was further distinguished by his mother, Theodota, who was the daughter of Aripert I, linking him to a significant royal heritage.

Following the death of his father in six hundred seventy-one, Garibald ascended to the throne, albeit briefly. His reign lasted a mere three months, a testament to the turbulent political landscape of the time. During this short period, he faced considerable opposition from the supporters of his uncle, Perctarit, who had been exiled by Grimoald nine years prior.

The political machinations of the era culminated in the return of Perctarit, as his loyal followers successfully campaigned for his reinstatement. This led to the deposition of the young king, marking a swift end to Garibald's rule.

Notably, Garibald holds the distinction of being the last Arian king in Europe, a title that underscores the religious and cultural shifts occurring during his time. His brief reign remains a poignant chapter in the history of the Lombards.
