Shandling gained prominence with his stand-up performances, particularly on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, where he became a frequent guest host and was even considered a leading contender to succeed Carson. In 1986, he created It's Garry Shandling's Show, which aired on Showtime and earned four Emmy nominations, including one for Shandling himself, before concluding in 1990.

His next venture, The Larry Sanders Show, premiered on HBO in 1992 and solidified his legacy in television.
