His journey into the world of gaming began in the 1960s when he established an organization of wargaming clubs and founded the Gen Con tabletop game convention, which became a cornerstone of the gaming community.

In nineteen seventy-one, Gygax co-developed Chainmail, a miniatures wargame that focused on medieval warfare, in collaboration with Jeff Perren. Two years later, he co-founded TSR, originally known as Tactical Studies Rules, with his childhood friend Don Kaye. The following year marked a significant milestone in gaming history when TSR published D&D, a groundbreaking creation that would change the landscape of role-playing games forever.
