Gary Herbert

Gary Herbert, born on May seventh, nineteen forty-seven, is a prominent American politician and real-estate agent who made significant contributions to the state of Utah. He served as the seventeenth governor of Utah from two thousand nine to two thousand twenty-one, marking a notable eleven years and five months in office. A dedicated member of the Republican Party, Herbert also chaired the National Governors Association during the two thousand fifteen to two thousand sixteen cycle.

Herbert's political journey began in nineteen ninety when he was appointed to the Utah County Commission, where he served for fourteen years. His ambition led him to run for the Republican nomination for governor in two thousand four, ultimately becoming the running mate of fellow Republican candidate Jon Huntsman in the general election. Following Huntsman's appointment as the United States Ambassador to China, Herbert ascended to the governorship on August eleventh, two thousand nine.

In two thousand ten, Herbert was elected to complete the remainder of Huntsman's term in a special gubernatorial election, defeating Democratic nominee Peter Corroon with an impressive sixty-four percent of the vote. He continued to build on this success, winning a full four-year term in two thousand twelve against Democratic businessman Peter Cooke with sixty-eight percent of the vote, and was re-elected for a second full term in two thousand sixteen.

In two thousand nineteen, Herbert announced his decision not to seek re-election for a third term in two thousand twenty, endorsing his Lieutenant Governor, Spencer Cox, for the gubernatorial candidacy. His tenure as governor not only made him the longest-serving Republican governor of Utah but also positioned him as the second longest-serving governor in the state's history, just behind Cal Rampton.
