Gary Ruvkun

Gary Ruvkun, born on March 26, 1952, is a distinguished American molecular biologist affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School in Boston. His groundbreaking research has significantly advanced our understanding of genetic regulation.

Ruvkun is renowned for his pivotal discovery of the mechanisms by which lin-4, the first microRNA identified by Victor Ambros, regulates the translation of target messenger RNAs. He further contributed to the field by discovering let-7, the second microRNA, which is conserved across various animal species, including humans. These discoveries unveiled a new realm of RNA regulation, highlighting the intricate processes at play in gene expression.

In addition to his work on microRNAs, Ruvkun has made significant contributions to the understanding of insulin-like signaling and its implications for aging and metabolism. His research has opened new avenues for exploring the biological processes that govern these critical aspects of life.
