Gaspard Fauteux

Gaspard Fauteux, born on August twenty-seventh, nineteen ninety-eight, in St-Hyacinthe, Quebec, emerged from a prominent political lineage. His grandfather, Honoré Mercier, and uncle, Lomer Gouin, both served as Premiers of Quebec, while his familial connections extended to Joseph Godbout, a Liberal MP and later Senator, and his brother, Gérald Fauteux, a respected judge.

Initially trained as a dentist, Fauteux ventured into the world of business before entering politics. He made his political debut by defeating Camillien Houde, the leader of the Quebec Conservative Party and Mayor of Montreal, to secure a seat in the Quebec legislature for the Quebec Liberal Party. Although he lost his seat in nineteen thirty-five, he returned to business until he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in a by-election in nineteen forty-two, representing the Quebec riding of St. Mary.

Fauteux's parliamentary career was marked by his opposition to conscription and his role as a delegate at the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Conference post-World War II. Despite his lack of legal training, he was appointed Speaker of the House of Commons by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King after the nineteen forty-five election. His tenure was characterized by challenges in parliamentary procedure, as he often made decisions prematurely, favoring the social aspects of his role.

In nineteen fifty, Fauteux was appointed the nineteenth Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, a position he held until nineteen fifty-eight. He married Marguerite Barré, the daughter of Canadian artist Raoul Barré, on September eighteenth, nineteen twenty-three, and together they raised four children: Roger, Paul, Marie (Mimi), and Gaspard Jr. Following his death in nineteen sixty-three, he was entombed at Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal.
