Gene Robinson

Gene Robinson, born on May twenty-ninth, nineteen forty-seven, is a retired Anglican priest who made history as the first openly gay priest to be consecrated a bishop in a major Christian denomination that upholds the historic episcopate. His election as bishop coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire in two thousand three marked a significant milestone in the church's history, and he officially became the bishop diocesan in March two thousand four.

Before ascending to the episcopate, Robinson served as Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of New Hampshire, where he was known for his dedication and leadership. His consecration was met with considerable controversy, leading to a schism within the Episcopal Church. Many traditional Episcopalians chose to leave the church, forming the Anglican Church in North America and aligning with bishops outside the Episcopal Church in the United States, a movement referred to as the Anglican realignment.

Robinson's journey and the challenges he faced have been documented in various print and film formats, highlighting the impact of his groundbreaking role within the church. In two thousand ten, he announced his intention to retire in two thousand thirteen at the age of sixty-five, passing the mantle to his successor, A. Robert Hirschfeld.
