Geneviève Castrée

Geneviève Castrée, born Geneviève Elverum (née Gosselin) on April 9, 1981, was a talented Canadian cartoonist, illustrator, and musician hailing from Quebec. Her passion for comics ignited at a young age, leading her to create her first work, Lait Frappé, published by L'Oie de Cravan in 2000. Over the next few years, she continued to expand her artistic repertoire, releasing three additional books by 2004, including Die Fabrik, Roulatheque Roulatheque Nicolore, and Pamplemoussi, the latter marking a significant turning point in her career.

In 2012, Castrée achieved international acclaim with her book Susceptible, which showcased her unique storytelling and artistic style. This success was followed by the release of Maman Sauvage, a collection of poems in French, in 2015. Tragically, her life was cut short, but her legacy continued with the posthumous publications of A Bubble and Maman Apprivoisée, further solidifying her impact on the literary and artistic communities.

Beyond her work in comics and illustration, Castrée was also a gifted musician, recording a total of eight albums under the names Woelv and Ô Paon. Her artistic journey intertwined with her personal life when she met musician Phil Elverum in 2003, marrying him the following year. The couple welcomed their only child in 2015, a year that also brought the devastating news of her pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Geneviève Castrée passed away on July 9, 2016, leaving behind a profound influence on those who knew her and the art world.

In the wake of her passing, Elverum honored her memory through a series of albums that reflected on their life together, ensuring that her spirit and artistry would continue to resonate with audiences.
