Gennadiy Aygi

Gennadiy Aygi, born on August twenty-first, nineteen thirty-four, in the village of Shaimurzino, Chuvashia, USSR, was a distinguished Russian poet, writer, and translator. He began his literary journey in the Chuvash language in nineteen fifty-eight, showcasing his deep connection to his cultural roots while also writing in Russian.

In nineteen fifty-three, Aygi moved to Moscow, where he would spend the remainder of his life. His poetry is celebrated for its unique voice and profound depth, earning him numerous accolades throughout his career. Among these are the Andrey Bely Prize in nineteen eighty-seven, the Pasternak Prize in two thousand, the Prize of the French Academy in nineteen seventy-two, the Petrarch Prize in nineteen ninety-three, the Golden Wreath of the Struga Poetry Evenings in nineteen ninety-four, and the Jan Smrek Prize from Bratislava, Slovakia.

Aygi's influence extended beyond the written word; in two thousand three, he participated in the prestigious International Literature Festival Berlin. His work also inspired composer Sofia Gubaidulina, who set several of his poems to music in her cycle titled Jetzt immer Schnee, or 'Now always snow.'

Gennadiy Aygi's legacy continues through his son, Aleksey Aygi, who is a composer in his own right, further enriching the cultural tapestry that Aygi contributed to during his lifetime.
