Geoff Downes

Geoff Downes, born on August 25, 1952, in Stockport, is a renowned English keyboardist celebrated for his contributions to the music industry as a member of iconic bands such as the Buggles, Yes, and Asia. His journey began in London, where he pursued a career in music, leading to the formation of the Buggles with Trevor Horn in 1977. The duo achieved remarkable success with their debut album, The Age of Plastic, released in 1980, which featured the groundbreaking hit single 'Video Killed the Radio Star'.

In May 1980, Downes joined the legendary progressive rock band Yes alongside Horn, contributing to the album Drama. Following Yes's disbandment in 1981, he collaborated with Horn to produce a second Buggles album, Adventures in Modern Recording, although his involvement was primarily during the first half of the project. This period also saw him co-founding the supergroup Asia with fellow ex-Yes musician Steve Howe.

Downes's career has been marked by his dynamic presence in Asia, from his initial departure in 1986 to his return in 1990, where he has remained an integral part of the lineup ever since. In addition to his work with these bands, he has released several solo albums and produced for notable artists, including Mike Oldfield and the Thompson Twins.

In 2006, Downes made headlines by reuniting the original lineup of Asia and later rejoined Yes in 2011, continuing to be an active member of both groups. Since 1998, he has occasionally reunited with Horn to perform classic Buggles songs. Notably, Downes holds a Guinness World Record for performing with an astonishing twenty-eight keyboards on stage during a single performance.
