Geoffrey Marcy

Geoffrey Marcy, born on September twenty-ninth, nineteen fifty-four, is a prominent American astronomer and astrophysicist known for his pioneering work in the field of exoplanet detection and characterization. His academic journey led him to become a professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, and an adjunct professor of physics and astronomy at San Francisco State University.

Throughout his illustrious career, Marcy and his research teams made significant contributions to the discovery of extrasolar planets, identifying seventy out of the first one hundred known exoplanets. Notably, he was instrumental in the discovery of the first planetary system around a Sun-like star, Upsilon Andromedae, marking a milestone in the study of planetary systems beyond our own.

In addition to his groundbreaking discoveries, Marcy served as a co-investigator on the NASA Kepler space telescope mission, collaborating with esteemed colleagues such as R. Paul Butler, Debra Fischer, and Steven S. Vogt, among others. His work has greatly advanced our understanding of the universe and the potential for life beyond Earth.

However, Marcy's career faced challenges following an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment in two thousand fifteen, which ultimately led to his resignation from the University of California, Berkeley.
