Georg von Trapp

Georg von Trapp, born on April 4, 1880, was a distinguished officer in the Austro-Hungarian Navy, renowned for his remarkable achievements as a submariner and military commander during World War I. He gained fame as the most successful Austro-Hungarian submarine commander, sinking eleven Allied merchant ships and two warships, which earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Military Order of Maria Theresa.

After the war, Trapp's life took a personal turn when he lost his first wife, Agathe Whitehead, to scarlet fever in 1922, leaving him to raise their seven children. In 1927, he married Maria Augusta Kutschera, who had initially come to tutor one of his daughters. Together, they faced the challenges of the Great Depression, which led them to embrace a new path as singers, ultimately forming the Trapp Family Singers.

Following the Anschluss, Trapp declined a commission in the German Navy and chose to emigrate with his family to the United States, where they sought a fresh start. After his passing in 1947, the family home in Stowe, Vermont, was transformed into the Trapp Family Lodge, a testament to their enduring legacy.

Maria von Trapp's memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, published in 1949, inspired the West German film The Trapp Family in 1956, which later served as the foundation for the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music, released in 1959 and directed by Robert Wise.
