George Copway

George Copway, born in 1818, was a prominent figure among the Mississaugas Ojibwa, known for his multifaceted contributions as a writer, ethnographer, and Methodist missionary. His Ojibwa name, Kah-Ge-Ga-Gah-Bowh, translates to 'He Who Stands Forever,' reflecting his enduring legacy in advocating for indigenous peoples.

In 1847, Copway published a memoir detailing his experiences as a missionary, which catapulted him to fame, making him Canada's first literary celebrity in the United States. His work not only showcased his personal journey but also highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Ojibwa people.

Four years later, in 1851, he released 'The Traditional History and Characteristic Sketches of The Ojibway Nation,' marking a significant milestone as the first published history of the Ojibwa in English. This groundbreaking work provided invaluable insights into the traditions and characteristics of his people, further solidifying his role as a key figure in indigenous literature.
