George Coyne

George Vincent Coyne, S.J., born on January 19, 1933, was a distinguished American Jesuit priest and astronomer whose remarkable career spanned several decades. He served as the director of the Vatican Observatory and led its research group at the University of Arizona from 1978 until his passing in 2020. His work at the intersection of faith and science made him a prominent figure in both fields.

In addition to his role at the Vatican Observatory, Coyne was dedicated to academia, teaching at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, from January 2012 until his death. His teachings and writings emphasized the importance of reconciling theological beliefs with scientific understanding, a mission he pursued passionately throughout his life.

Coyne was known for his clear stance on the interpretation of scripture, famously stating in 1994, "One thing the Bible is not is a scientific textbook. Scripture is made up of myth, of poetry, of history. But it is simply not teaching science." This perspective highlighted his commitment to a nuanced understanding of both faith and reason.
