George DiCarlo

George DiCarlo, born on July 13, 1963, is a distinguished American former competition swimmer renowned for his remarkable achievements in the pool. A two-time Olympic medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, he excelled in the 400 and 1500-meter freestyle events, setting American records in both disciplines. His journey in competitive swimming began at Thomas Jefferson High School, where he made waves as a member of the Colorado Rapids Swim Team.

During his high school years, DiCarlo showcased his talent at the AAU Junior Olympic Short Course Swimming Championships in April 1980, where he set a new meet record in the 1,650 free with a time of fifteen minutes and thirty-two point zero four seconds. Additionally, he earned a commendable third place in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing just four seconds behind the record time of the first-place swimmer.

Continuing his swimming career, DiCarlo attended the University of Arizona, where he trained under the esteemed Hall of Fame Head Coach Dick Jochums. Competing for the Arizona Wildcats swimming and diving team, he became an NCAA Champion in the 500-yard freestyle in both 1983 and 1984. His exceptional performance earned him All American honors throughout all four years of his eligibility, and he broke the American record in the 500-yard freestyle on two occasions.

In addition to his collegiate success, DiCarlo was recognized as the top US 1,500-meter swimmer at the World Trials in 1982. He represented the United States at the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where he placed sixth in the event, competing against formidable opponents, including Russia's Vladimir Salnikov, who claimed the gold medal.
