George Eliot, born on November twenty-second, eighteen nineteen, was a prominent English novelist, translator, philosopher, writer, poet, journalist, essayist, and editor. She is best known for her remarkable works that delve into the complexities of human nature and society, with a particular focus on realism and psychological insight.

Her novels, including the acclaimed 'Middlemarch' and 'Daniel Deronda,' are set against the backdrop of provincial England, where Eliot's detailed depictions of the countryside and sense of place resonate deeply with readers. Virginia Woolf famously described 'Middlemarch' as 'one of the few English novels written for grown-up people,' while contemporaries like Martin Amis and Julian Barnes hailed it as the greatest novel in the English language.

Eliot's personal life was as unconventional as her literary career. She lived with the married George Henry Lewes from eighteen fifty-four until his death in eighteen seventy-eight, referring to him as her husband despite his ongoing marriage to Agnes Jervis. After Lewes's passing, Eliot married her longtime friend John Cross, a man significantly younger than herself, in May eighteen eighty. Following this marriage, she adopted the name Mary Ann Cross, marking a new chapter in her life as she continued to influence literature and thought.
