George Ernest Shelley

George Ernest Shelley, born on May fifteenth, eighteen forty, was a distinguished English ornithologist and geologist. He was notably the nephew of the renowned poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, which perhaps influenced his intellectual pursuits and appreciation for the natural world.

His educational journey took him to the Lycée de Versailles, where he honed his academic skills. Following his studies, Shelley served a few years in the Grenadier Guards, a testament to his diverse experiences before fully dedicating himself to the sciences.

Throughout his career, Shelley made significant contributions to ornithology, authoring several important works. His notable publications include 'A Handbook to the Birds of Egypt' in eighteen seventy-two, 'A Monograph of the Cinnyridae, or Family of Sun-Birds' spanning from eighteen seventy-six to eighteen eighty, and the extensive 'The Birds of Africa,' which was published in five volumes between eighteen ninety-six and nineteen twelve, beautifully illustrated by J. G. Keulemans.
