George Fernandes

George Fernandes, born on June third, nineteen thirty, was a prominent Indian politician, trade unionist, and journalist. He served as the Defence Minister of India from nineteen ninety-eight until two thousand four, marking a significant period in Indian politics. A veteran socialist, he represented various constituencies in Bihar and was a member of the Lok Sabha for over thirty years, beginning his political journey in Bombay, now Mumbai, in nineteen sixty-seven.

Fernandes was deeply involved in the socialist trade union movement, becoming a trade union leader in Bombay during the nineteen fifties and sixties. His political career took off when he defeated S K Patil of the Indian National Congress in the nineteen sixty-seven parliamentary elections. As president of the All India Railwaymen's Federation, he led a major railway strike in nineteen seventy-four and became a notable figure during the Emergency era of nineteen seventy-five, challenging Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's imposition of a state of emergency.

After the Emergency was lifted, he won the Muzaffarpur seat in Bihar in absentia in nineteen seventy-seven. As industries minister, he took a bold stance by revoking the operating licenses of multinational giants IBM and Coca-Cola due to investment violations. His tenure as railways minister from nineteen eighty-nine to nineteen ninety was marked by his pivotal role in the Konkan Railway project, showcasing his commitment to infrastructure development.

During his time as defence minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led governments, he oversaw critical events such as the Kargil War and the nuclear tests at Pokhran. Despite facing controversies, including the Barak Missile scandal and the Tehelka affair, Fernandes remained a significant figure in Indian politics, winning nine Lok Sabha elections from nineteen sixty-seven to two thousand four. He passed away on January twenty-ninth, two thousand nineteen, at the age of eighty-eight, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service.
