George Perry Floyd Jr. was born on October 14, 1973, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and later moved to Houston, Texas, where he developed a passion for sports, particularly football and basketball. His early life was marked by athletic pursuits, which he continued throughout high school and college. However, Floyd's life took a tumultuous turn when he faced legal troubles, resulting in multiple convictions between 1997 and 2005, including a significant sentence for aggravated robbery in 2007.
After serving four years in prison, Floyd was paroled in 2013 and sought to turn his life around. He became a mentor in his religious community and actively shared anti-violence messages on social media. In 2014, he relocated to the Minneapolis area, where he worked as a truck driver and bouncer. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to the loss of both his jobs, further complicating his circumstances.
Tragically, on May 25, 2020, Floyd's life was cut short when he was murdered by a police officer during an arrest related to an alleged counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. Derek Chauvin, one of the officers present, knelt on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes, leading to his death. This incident sparked widespread protests against police brutality, particularly towards Black individuals, and Floyd's final words, 'I can't breathe,' became a powerful rallying cry for justice.
In the aftermath of his death, the City of Minneapolis reached a settlement of twenty-seven million dollars with Floyd's family for wrongful death. Chauvin was later convicted of two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter, receiving a sentence of twenty-two and a half years in prison. The other officers involved were also held accountable for violating Floyd's civil rights, marking a significant moment in the ongoing fight for racial justice.
