George Frederick Baird

George Frederick Baird, born on September fifth, eighteen fifty-one, in Wickham, New Brunswick, was a prominent Canadian politician and lawyer. He began his legal studies under the guidance of Charles Nelson Skinner, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in both law and business.

After completing his legal education, Baird ventured into the shipping industry, where he became a pivotal figure in establishing steamship services between Saint John and the Caribbean. His influence extended to operating steamship lines along the St. John River, showcasing his commitment to enhancing maritime connectivity.

Baird's political career commenced with his election to the House of Commons of Canada in eighteen eighty-seven, representing the riding of Queen's. His political journey saw him re-elected in a by-election the following year, although he faced defeat in eighteen ninety-one. However, he made a comeback in another by-election in eighteen ninety-two, demonstrating his resilience in the political arena.

Before his federal political career, Baird served as an alderman in Saint John, New Brunswick, for two years, contributing to local governance. His legacy is further commemorated by his former residence at 269-271 Germain Street in Saint John, which has been designated as a historic site.
