George Frideric Handel

George Frideric Handel, born on February 23, 1685, in Halle, was a German-British composer whose influence on the Baroque music scene is unparalleled. He spent his formative years in Hamburg and Italy, ultimately settling in London in 1712, where he would establish himself as a naturalised British subject by 1727. Handel's music is characterized by its rich blend of the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition and the vibrant styles of Italian Baroque composers.

Throughout his illustrious career, Handel became renowned for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi, and organ concerti. He was instrumental in bringing Italian opera to its zenith and was pivotal in creating the English oratorio and organ concerto genres. His works, such as the celebrated 'Messiah' and the orchestral pieces 'Water Music' and 'Music for the Royal Fireworks,' remain staples in the classical repertoire.

Handel's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish three commercial opera companies, catering to the tastes of the English nobility. However, after a significant health crisis in 1737, he shifted his focus towards the middle class and began composing English choral works. This transition marked a turning point in his career, leading to the enduring success of 'Messiah' in 1742, after which he never returned to Italian opera.

Handel's legacy is further cemented by his coronation anthems, particularly 'Zadok the Priest,' which has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. He passed away on April 14, 1759, at the age of seventy-four, leaving behind a wealth of musical treasures and a reputation as one of the greatest composers of his time. His music has seen a resurgence in interest since the mid-20th century, with notable admiration from Classical-era composers like Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
