George I of Greece

George I of Greece, born on December twenty-fourth, eighteen forty-five in Copenhagen, was originally a Danish prince destined for a career in the Royal Danish Navy. However, at the tender age of seventeen, he was elected king by the Greek National Assembly, following the deposition of the unpopular King Otto. His ascension was supported by the Great Powers, including the United Kingdom, the Second French Empire, and the Russian Empire.

In eighteen sixty-seven, George married Grand Duchess Olga Constantinovna of Russia, marking the beginning of a new Greek dynasty. His family ties were notable, with two of his sisters marrying into the British and Russian royal families. This connected him to prominent figures such as Edward VII of the United Kingdom and Alexander III of Russia, while his nephews included George V of the United Kingdom and Nicholas II of Russia.

George's reign, which lasted nearly fifty years, is the longest in modern Greek history. It was marked by significant territorial gains as Greece sought to establish its presence in pre-World War I Europe. The peaceful cession of the Ionian Islands by Britain in eighteen sixty-four and the annexation of Thessaly from the Ottoman Empire after the Russo-Turkish War of eighteen seventy-seven to eighteen seventy-eight were key achievements. However, his ambitions were not without setbacks, as evidenced by Greece's defeat in the Greco-Turkish War of eighteen ninety-seven.

Tragically, George's life came to an end on March eighteenth, nineteen thirteen, when he was assassinated in Thessaloniki during the First Balkan War, a period when Greek troops had successfully captured much of Greek Macedonia and Epirus.
