George Karpati, born on May seventeenth, nineteen thirty-four in Debrecen, Hungary, was a distinguished Canadian neurologist and neuroscientist. A Holocaust survivor, he emigrated to Canada in nineteen fifty-seven, where he would go on to make significant contributions to the field of neurology, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, including muscular dystrophy.

After earning his M.D. from Dalhousie University in nineteen sixty, Karpati dedicated thirty years to clinical practice, research, and teaching at McGill University, where he held the prestigious Izaak Walton Killam Chair and served as a Professor of Neurology. His expertise and commitment to advancing the understanding of neuromuscular diseases earned him recognition as one of the leading experts in his field.

Throughout his career, Karpati received numerous accolades for his groundbreaking work. In nineteen ninety-nine, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and became a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His contributions to muscular dystrophy research were honored in two thousand one when he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, followed by his knighthood in the National Order of Quebec in two thousand five.

Karpati passed away on February sixth, two thousand nine, at the age of seventy-four. He was laid to rest in Montreal at the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in neurology and a profound impact on the lives of many.
