George Koovakad

George Koovakad, born on 11 August 1973, is a distinguished Indian cardinal of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. He has been serving as the prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue since 2025, a role that underscores his commitment to fostering dialogue among different faiths.

His journey within the Holy See began in earnest when he joined the diplomatic service, where he held various assignments across multiple countries from 2006 to 2020. His extensive experience in international relations culminated in his work with the Holy See's Secretariat of State, particularly in the Journeys Office, which is responsible for organizing Pope Francis' overseas trips. Koovakad has been at the helm of this office since 2021, showcasing his leadership and organizational skills.

On 6 October 2024, Pope Francis announced his intention to elevate Koovakad to the rank of cardinal, a significant recognition of his contributions to the Church. Following this announcement, he received episcopal consecration on 24 November and was officially made a cardinal on 7 December, marking a new chapter in his ecclesiastical career.
