George Koval

George Koval, born on December twenty-fifth, nineteen thirteen, in Sioux City, Iowa, emerged from a lineage of Jewish emigrants from what is now Belarus. His early life was marked by a significant move to the Soviet Union, where he settled in the Jewish Autonomous Region near the Chinese border with his family.

As a young adult, Koval was recruited by the GRU, the Soviet military intelligence, and trained for espionage activities. He was assigned the code name DELMAR and returned to the United States in nineteen forty, where he would later be drafted into the U.S. Army in early nineteen forty-three.

During his military service, Koval worked in atomic research laboratories, where he played a crucial role in the Soviet atomic bomb project. He relayed vital information regarding the production processes and volumes of polonium, plutonium, and uranium used in American atomic weaponry back to the Soviet Union, significantly accelerating their nuclear weapons development.

In nineteen forty-eight, Koval embarked on a European vacation but chose not to return to the United States. His contributions to Soviet intelligence were later recognized; in two thousand, he received a military decoration from the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation for his service. Koval publicly acknowledged his past as a spy during a gathering with his pupils.

Posthumously, on November second, two thousand seven, he was awarded the Hero of the Russian Federation decoration by Russian President Vladimir Putin, solidifying his legacy as a pivotal figure in the history of espionage.
