George Luks

George Luks, born on August thirteenth, eighteen sixty-seven, was a prominent American artist known for his affiliation with the Ashcan School of American painting. This movement was characterized by its commitment to depicting the gritty realities of urban life, often focusing on the struggles of the working class.

After an enriching period of travel and study in Europe, Luks returned to the United States, where he made a name for himself as a newspaper illustrator and cartoonist in Philadelphia. It was here that he became part of a dynamic group of artists, led by Robert Henri, who sought to challenge the refined standards set by the National Academy of Design.
