George Martinuzzi

George Martinuzzi, born Juraj Utješenović on June eighteenth, fourteen eighty-two, was a prominent Croatian nobleman and a significant figure in Hungarian politics during the sixteenth century. Known for his unwavering support of King John Zápolya and his son, King John Sigismund Zápolya, Martinuzzi played a crucial role in the political landscape of the time.

As a member of the Pauline Order, Martinuzzi dedicated his life to the church, serving as a Catholic priest and later ascending to the position of Bishop of Nagyvárad, which is present-day Oradea. His ecclesiastical career continued to flourish as he became the Archbishop of Esztergom, a pivotal role within the Hungarian Catholic Church.

In recognition of his contributions to the church and state, Martinuzzi was elevated to the rank of cardinal, further solidifying his influence in both religious and political spheres. His legacy is marked by his efforts to navigate the complexities of power during a tumultuous period in Hungarian history.
