Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of George Mostow

George Mostow, born on July fourth, nineteen twenty-three, was a distinguished American mathematician celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to Lie theory. His academic journey culminated at Yale University, where he held the esteemed position of Henry Ford II (emeritus) Professor of Mathematics.

A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Mostow's influence extended beyond the classroom. He served as the forty-ninth president of the American Mathematical Society from nineteen eighty-seven to nineteen eighty-eight and was a dedicated trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study from nineteen eighty-two to nineteen ninety-two.

Mostow's exploration of the rigidity phenomenon for lattices in Lie groups led to the formulation of what is now known as Mostow rigidity. This pivotal work not only advanced the field of mathematics but also significantly impacted the research of three Fields medalists: Grigori Margulis, William Thurston, and Grigori Perelman.
