George Osborne

George Osborne, born on May twenty-third, nineteen seventy-one, is a distinguished British politician, economist, writer, historian, and journalist. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from two thousand ten to two thousand sixteen and held the position of First Secretary of State from two thousand fifteen to two thousand sixteen in the Cameron government. A member of the Conservative Party, he represented the Tatton constituency as a Member of Parliament from two thousand one until two thousand seventeen.

Born in Paddington, Osborne is the son of Sir Peter Osborne, co-founder of Osborne & Little. His education began at Norland Place School, followed by Colet Court and St Paul's School in London. He later attended the University of Oxford, where he studied at Magdalen College. His career commenced as a freelancer for The Daily Telegraph before he joined the Conservative Research Department in nineteen ninety-four, eventually becoming head of its political section.

Osborne's political journey saw him appointed as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury in two thousand four and later as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. Following the Conservative victory in the two thousand ten general election, he was appointed Chancellor, inheriting a significant deficit due to the financial crisis of two thousand eight. His tenure was marked by stringent austerity measures aimed at reducing the budget deficit and the launch of the Northern Powerhouse initiative.

After the Conservatives secured an overall majority in the two thousand fifteen general election, Osborne was reappointed Chancellor and also became First Secretary of State. His close relationship with David Cameron led to speculation about his potential succession as party leader. However, following the two thousand sixteen referendum on the European Union and Cameron's resignation, Osborne was dismissed by Theresa May. He spent a year on the backbenches before leaving public office in two thousand seventeen.

Post-politics, Osborne took on the role of editor for the Evening Standard from two thousand seventeen to two thousand twenty. He has been the chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership since two thousand sixteen and of the British Museum since two thousand twenty-one. Additionally, he has co-hosted the podcast Political Currency with Ed Balls since two thousand twenty-three.
