George Preca

George Franco Preca, known in Maltese as Ġorġ Preca, was born on 12 February 1880 and became a prominent figure in the Maltese Catholic community. As a dedicated priest and the founder of the Society of Christian Doctrine, he played a pivotal role in religious education and pastoral care. His commitment to the faith earned him the affectionate title of 'Malta’s second father in faith' from Pope John Paul II.

After joining the Third Order of Carmelites, he adopted the religious name 'Franco'. His innovative approach to teaching and community engagement garnered both admiration and scrutiny. Despite facing suspicions of heresy from some senior clergy, which led to the temporary closure of his teaching centers, his work was ultimately recognized and reinstated.

In 1952, his contributions to the Church were acknowledged when Pope Pius XII appointed him as a papal privy chamberlain and conferred upon him the title of Monsignor. Notably, in 1957, he introduced five new mysteries to the Rosary, which he called the 'Mysteries of Light'. These mysteries later inspired the five Luminous Mysteries promoted by Saint John Paul II in 2002.

George Preca's legacy continued to flourish, culminating in his canonization as a saint in 2007. His life and work remain a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to the spiritual growth of his community.
