George Rhoden

George Rhoden, born on December 13, 1926, in Kingston, Jamaica, was a remarkable sprinter who made his mark in the world of athletics during the late 1940s and early 1950s. After moving to San Francisco, California, he became one of Jamaica's most successful long sprinters, alongside notable athletes like Arthur Wint and Herb McKenley.

Rhoden's Olympic journey began at the 1948 Summer Olympics, where he competed in the 100 m and 400 m events. Although he did not secure a medal, he was part of a promising Jamaican 4 × 400 m relay team that faced disappointment when Wint suffered an injury in the final. However, his career took a significant turn when he set a world record in the 400 m with a time of 45.8 seconds on August 22, 1950, in Eskilstuna, Sweden.

At the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Rhoden's talent shone brightly. As a world record holder, he emerged victorious in the 400 m, narrowly defeating his compatriot McKenley. Additionally, he played a crucial role as the anchor runner for the Jamaican relay team, clinching a second Olympic gold medal and setting a new world record of 3:03.9, edging out the United States by a mere tenth of a second.

Throughout his athletic career, Rhoden achieved numerous accolades, including winning the AAU championships in the 400 m from nineteen forty-nine to nineteen fifty-one. As a student at Morgan State University, he also triumphed in the NCAA championships in the 220 yd (200 m) in nineteen fifty-one and in the 440 yd (400 m) from nineteen fifty to nineteen fifty-two. He was a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

George Rhoden passed away on August 24, 2024, at the age of ninety-seven, leaving behind a legacy as one of Jamaica's greatest sprinters.
