George Sphrantzes

George Sphrantzes, born on August thirtieth, fourteen oh one, was a prominent historian and writer during a tumultuous period in Byzantine history. He served under the reign of John VIII Palaiologos and became a close confidant to Constantine XI Palaiologos, the last emperor of the Byzantine Empire.

An eyewitness to the fall of Constantinople in fourteen fifty-three, Sphrantzes experienced the harrowing events of that day firsthand. Following the city's capture by the Ottomans, he was enslaved but was ransomed shortly thereafter, allowing him to continue his life amidst the remnants of the fallen empire.

For several years, Sphrantzes dedicated himself to serving the surviving members of the Palaiologian family. In fourteen seventy-two, he took monastic vows, marking a significant turn in his life. It was during his time as a monk that he penned his historical accounts, which notably conclude with Sultan Mehmed II's attempt to seize Naupaktos, an event he dated to the summer of fourteen seventy-seven.

Though the exact date of his death remains uncertain, it is widely assumed that Sphrantzes passed away not long after documenting the Sultan's ambitions, leaving behind a legacy that captures the essence of a bygone era.
