His commitment to education was evident as he held a first-class certificate from the Normal School of New Brunswick and dedicated six years to teaching at a Superior School.

In addition to his teaching career, Baird served as the Postmaster from eighteen seventy-eight until eighteen eighty-two. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become a lumber merchant and general dealer in Perth Centre, New Brunswick, starting in eighteen seventy-four. This diverse background laid the foundation for his future political endeavors.

Baird's political career began when he was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in eighteen eighty-four. His influence grew as he was appointed to the Legislative Council of New Brunswick in April eighteen ninety-one, serving until its abolition in eighteen ninety-two. He returned to the Legislative Assembly in the general election of eighteen ninety-two, where he remained until June nineteenth, eighteen ninety-five.

On the advice of Mackenzie Bowell, Baird was called to the Senate, representing the senatorial division of Victoria, New Brunswick. As a member of the Conservative Party, he served in the Senate for nearly twenty-two years until his passing in nineteen seventeen, leaving a lasting legacy in New Brunswick's political landscape.
