George V

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of George V

George V, born on June third, eighteen sixty-five, was a significant figure in British history, serving as King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, as well as Emperor of India from May sixth, nineteen ten until his death in nineteen thirty-six. He was born during the reign of his grandmother, Queen Victoria, as the second son of the Prince and Princess of Wales, who later became King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Initially third in line for the throne, George's life took a pivotal turn following the unexpected death of his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, in January eighteen ninety-two.

In the wake of this tragedy, George married Princess Victoria Mary of Teck, his brother's former fiancée, and together they had six children. Following the death of Queen Victoria in nineteen oh one, George's father ascended the throne, and George was subsequently created Prince of Wales. His ascension to the throne as king-emperor came with his father's passing in nineteen ten, marking the beginning of a reign that would witness profound political changes.

George V's reign was marked by the rise of various political movements, including socialism, communism, and fascism, alongside significant events such as the Irish republicanism and the Indian independence movement. The British Empire reached its territorial peak in the early nineteen twenties, and the Parliament Act of nineteen eleven established the supremacy of the elected House of Commons over the House of Lords. Notably, in nineteen seventeen, George became the first monarch of the House of Windsor, a name change prompted by anti-German sentiment during World War I.

His reign also saw the appointment of the first Labour ministry in nineteen twenty-four and the recognition of the Empire's Dominions as independent states within the British Commonwealth of Nations through the Statute of Westminster in nineteen thirty-one. However, George's later years were marred by health issues related to smoking, and he passed away in January nineteen thirty-six, leaving behind a legacy that would be continued by his eldest son, Edward VIII, who abdicated later that year in favor of his younger brother, Albert, who became George VI.
