George Vernot

George Vernot, born on February twenty-seventh, nineteen oh one, was a distinguished Canadian freestyle swimmer who made his mark in the early twentieth century. He showcased his exceptional talent at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, where he earned a silver medal in the 1500-metre freestyle and a bronze in the 400-metre event. Although he competed in the 100-metre freestyle, he did not advance past the semifinals.

Continuing his Olympic journey, Vernot participated in the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris, where he finished seventh in the 400-metre freestyle and eighth in the 1500-metre freestyle. His national achievements were equally impressive; he clinched the Canadian championships in the 100-, 220-, and 440-yard freestyle in nineteen nineteen, and again in the 220- and 440-yard events in nineteen twenty.

After his swimming career, Vernot pursued higher education and graduated with a degree in civil engineering from McGill University in nineteen twenty-six. He transitioned into a professional career, working for the City of Montreal, where he eventually became the chairman of the Board of Assessors in nineteen forty-eight.

In recognition of his contributions, a park in Montreal was named in his honor in nineteen sixty-nine, celebrating both his athletic achievements and his service to the community.
