George Washington Goethals

George Washington Goethals, born on June twenty-ninth, eighteen fifty-eight, was a distinguished American military officer and civil engineer. His most notable achievement was his pivotal role in the administration and supervision of the construction and opening of the Panama Canal, a monumental engineering feat that transformed global trade.

From nineteen fourteen to nineteen seventeen, Goethals served as the first Governor of the Panama Canal Zone, overseeing the operations and management of this critical infrastructure. His leadership during this period was instrumental in ensuring the successful completion of the canal, which remains a vital waterway to this day.

In addition to his work on the Panama Canal, Goethals held significant positions in the United States Army, including that of Acting Quartermaster General. He also served as the State Engineer of New Jersey, where he contributed to various engineering projects that benefited the state.
