Georgia Coleman

Georgia V. Coleman, born on January 23, 1912, was a remarkable American diver who made her mark in the world of competitive diving during the late 1920s and early 1930s. She showcased her exceptional talent at the 1928 and 1932 Olympics, where she competed in both the 3 m springboard and 10 m platform events. Throughout her illustrious career, Coleman earned a total of four Olympic medals: one gold, two silver, and one bronze, alongside an impressive eleven AAU titles at the national level.

At the 1932 Olympics, Coleman achieved her greatest triumph by winning the gold medal in the 3 metre springboard event. This victory was not only a personal achievement but also a moment of celebration as she announced her engagement to fellow Olympic diver Mickey Riley. However, the engagement was later called off, marking a poignant chapter in her life.

Tragically, Coleman's life took a difficult turn in 1937 when she contracted polio. Despite the challenges posed by the illness, she demonstrated remarkable resilience by learning to swim again. Unfortunately, her health continued to decline, and two years later, she developed pneumonia as a complication from the polio. Georgia Coleman passed away at the young age of twenty-eight on September 14, 1940, leaving behind a legacy of athletic excellence and determination.
