Georgios D. Orphanidis, born in 1859, was a distinguished ethnic Greek sports shooter who made his mark in the world of competitive shooting. His prowess with both pistol and rifle earned him a place in the annals of Olympic history, as he represented Greece in three significant events: the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, the 1906 Intercalated Games, and the 1908 Summer Olympics in London.
During the inaugural 1896 Olympics, Orphanidis showcased his skills by competing in all five shooting events. He began with the military rifle competition, where he achieved a commendable fifth place with a score of one thousand six hundred ninety-eight points. Although his performance in the military pistol event remains undocumented, it is noted that he did not secure a medal in this category.
In the free pistol event, Orphanidis faced challenges and finished in last place among five competitors. However, he rebounded in the rapid fire pistol event, where he claimed the second position with a score of two hundred forty-nine points, trailing only Ioannis Frangoudis. His crowning achievement came in the free rifle event, where he won the Olympic championship with an impressive score of one thousand five hundred eighty-three, bolstered by a perfect second-string score of five hundred twenty.
Orphanidis's remarkable shooting accuracy was evident as he missed only three shots out of forty, demonstrating his exceptional skill and dedication to the sport. His legacy as a pioneering athlete in Greek shooting sports continues to inspire future generations.
