Georgios Samaras, born on February 21, 1985, is a distinguished former professional footballer from Greece, known for his role as a forward. He began his football journey at OFI before making a significant move to the Eredivisie side Heerenveen in 2001. After two years, he made his first team debut and spent three more seasons with the club, showcasing his talent and potential.
In 2006, Samaras transitioned to the Premier League, signing with Manchester City for a fee of six million pounds. However, his time at City was challenging, particularly after the arrival of manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, which led to a loan to Celtic in January 2008. This loan turned into a permanent deal in the summer, where he truly flourished.
During his tenure at Celtic, Samaras played a pivotal role in the team's success, contributing to Scottish league championships in 2008, 2012, 2013, and 2014, while netting a remarkable seventy-four goals in two hundred forty-nine competitive matches. After leaving Celtic in 2014, he returned to the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion, though his appearances were limited, and a loan to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia proved unsuccessful.
In March 2016, he joined the North American Soccer League expansion team Rayo OKC, but after the team disbanded following one season, he signed with Real Zaragoza. His career continued with a stint at Turkish club Samsunspor before he ultimately retired in 2018.
Despite being eligible to represent Australia through his father, Ioannis Samaras, who was born in Melbourne, Georgios chose to play for Greece. He made his international debut in 2006 and became a regular fixture in the national team over the next eight years, earning eighty-one caps and scoring nine goals. His international career included participation in Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, Euro 2012, and the 2014 World Cup.
