Georgios Tsitas

Georgios Tsitas, born in 1872, was a notable Greek amateur wrestler who made his mark in the world of sports during the late nineteenth century. His most significant achievement came at the inaugural modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896, where he showcased his wrestling prowess on home soil.

In the wrestling competition, Tsitas began with a strategic advantage, receiving a bye in the first round that ensured he would finish among the top three competitors without even stepping onto the mat. This initial success set the stage for his semifinal bout against fellow Greek wrestler Stephanos Christopoulos, which Tsitas won decisively by executing a throw that demonstrated his skill and strength.

The final match saw Tsitas face off against Carl Schuhmann, a formidable German gymnast. Their contest was intense, lasting for forty minutes before it was postponed due to darkness, a testament to the endurance and determination of both athletes. However, the following day, Tsitas was unable to maintain his momentum and ultimately succumbed to Schuhmann, finishing the competition in second place.
