Gerald Bales

Gerald Bales, born on May twelfth, nineteen nineteen, in Toronto, Ontario, was a distinguished Canadian organist and composer. His musical journey began at the Toronto Conservatory of Music, where he studied from nineteen thirty-six to nineteen forty under notable instructors such as Herbert A. Fricker, Albert Procter, Leo Smith, and Healey Willan.

In nineteen thirty-seven, Bales showcased his talent with his first professional organ concert at the Eaton Auditorium in Toronto, featuring some of his original compositions. His career reached a significant milestone in nineteen forty-eight when he performed his Fantasy for piano and orchestra with the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, earning critical acclaim.

From nineteen thirty-seven to nineteen forty-one, he served as the organist and choirmaster at St Anne's Anglican Church in Toronto. His dedication to music led him to various church positions across Toronto, Calgary, and Minneapolis until nineteen seventy-one. Following this, he shared his expertise as a teacher of organ, choral conducting, and orchestration at the University of Ottawa from nineteen seventy-one to nineteen eighty-four.

Throughout his prolific career, Bales composed over one hundred twenty works for piano, organ, voice, orchestra, and chamber orchestra. He was a Fellow and served as the president of the Royal Canadian College of Organists from nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty-two. In recognition of his contributions to music, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in nineteen ninety-six.
