Gerardo Machado

Gerardo Machado, born on September twenty-eighth, eighteen seventy-one, was a prominent figure in Cuban history, serving as a general during the Cuban War of Independence. His political career culminated in his presidency from nineteen twenty-five to nineteen thirty-three, where he initially enjoyed significant popularity and support from various political factions.

As a member of the Liberal Party, a moderate reform-oriented group, Machado was elected president in nineteen twenty-four. His administration began with a commitment to reform and progress, but over time, his popularity waned. In response to growing dissent, he increasingly resorted to dictatorial measures, undermining the democratic principles he once championed.

Despite his promise to serve only one term, Machado sought re-election in nineteen twenty-eight, winning a heavily contested and non-democratic election marked by the repression of opposition voices. As protests escalated, his government curtailed free speech and took drastic actions against dissenters, including imprisonment, exile, and even murder.

Ultimately, the mounting pressure from protests and rebellions forced Machado to resign in nineteen thirty-three, paving the way for a provisional government led by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada, with the intervention of U.S. ambassador Sumner Welles. Following his ousting, Machado fled to exile in Miami Beach, Florida, marking the end of a tumultuous chapter in Cuban politics.
