Germanus V of Constantinople, born on December sixth, eighteen thirty-five, served as the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from February tenth, nineteen thirteen, until his resignation on October twenty-fifth, nineteen eighteen. His early education took place in Jerusalem and Athens, culminating at the prestigious Theological School of Halki.
Before ascending to the patriarchate, Germanus held several significant ecclesiastical positions. He was elected metropolitan of Kos in eighteen sixty-seven, followed by Rhodes from eighteen seventy-six to eighteen eighty-eight, Iraklia from eighteen eighty-eight to eighteen ninety-seven, and Chalkedon from eighteen ninety-seven until his election as patriarch in January nineteen thirteen.
Germanus was notably involved in the efforts to restore the exiled Joachim III of Constantinople during the years eighteen eighty-six to eighteen ninety-seven. His tenure as patriarch was marked by challenges, including a significant rebellion against the Orthodox Church on October seventh, nineteen eighteen, which was condemned by the Church itself.
Ultimately, Germanus was compelled to resign from his position on October twenty-fifth, nineteen eighteen. Following his resignation, he retired to Kadıköy, where he lived until his death in December nineteen twenty, leaving behind a legacy as the last patriarch to receive the imperial veranda, a symbol of the state's recognition by the Sultan.
