Gerolamo Emiliani

Gerolamo Emiliani, born in Venice in 1486, was a remarkable figure whose life was dedicated to humanitarian efforts. Initially serving in the military and later as a magistrate, he transitioned into a role that would define his legacy: that of a compassionate priest.

As the founder of the Somaschi Fathers, Emiliani devoted himself to the care of the sick, the hungry, and especially orphans. His unwavering commitment to these vulnerable populations led to the establishment of numerous hospitals and orphanages across several northern Italian towns, inspiring others to join in his mission of charity.

His contributions to society did not go unnoticed, and in 1767, he was canonized by the Catholic Church, solidifying his status as a saint. Today, Gerolamo Emiliani is revered as the patron saint of orphans, a testament to his enduring impact on the lives of those he served.
