Gerolf of Holland

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Gerolf of Holland

Gerolf of Holland, born in the year eight hundred fifty, is recognized as the second count of his name in the historical region of Friesland, which encompassed Holland during his time. His primary domain of influence was Kennemerland, where he established his power and legacy.

Often regarded as the founder of the County of Holland, Gerolf's contributions to the region are significant, even though the term 'Holland' itself emerged later. His lineage remains somewhat ambiguous; he is believed to be either a son or, more likely, a grandson of an earlier Gerolf, who served as a count in Frisia during the reign of Emperor Louis the Pious and later took monastic vows.

The earlier Gerolf, who passed away in the year eight hundred fifty-five, is thought to have been a descendant of Theodoric, who may trace his ancestry back to the Frisian king Redbad, who died in the year seven hundred nineteen. Count Gerolf is frequently identified as the father of Count Dirk I, marking him as a pivotal figure in the establishment of the first house of the Counts of Holland, a lineage that continued until it was inherited by John II of Hainaut in the year twelve ninety-nine.
