Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda was a remarkable figure in the literary world of the 19th century, born on March twenty-third, eighteen fourteen, in Puerto Príncipe, now known as Camagüey, Cuba. She spent her formative years in Cuba before her family relocated to Spain in eighteen thirty-six, where she began her writing career under the pseudonym La Peregrina, meaning The Pilgrim.

During her time in Spain, Avellaneda became a prolific writer, crafting an impressive body of work that included twenty plays and numerous poems. Her literary prowess shone brightly, but her most celebrated achievement remains the antislavery novel Sab, published in Madrid in eighteen forty-one. This poignant narrative tells the story of a slave named Sab, who harbors deep feelings for his mistress, Carlota, who remains unaware of his affections.

Avellaneda's life was marked by personal trials and triumphs. After living in Spain until eighteen fifty-nine, she returned to Cuba with her second husband, only to face the sorrow of his passing in eighteen sixty-three. Following this loss, she returned to Spain, where she continued to write until her death in Madrid in eighteen seventy-three, succumbing to diabetes at the age of fifty-eight.
