Ghada al-Samman

Ghada al-Samman, born in Damascus in nineteen forty-two, is a distinguished Syrian writer, journalist, and novelist. Hailing from a prominent and conservative Damascene family, her upbringing was steeped in a rich cultural heritage. Her father, Ahmed Al-Samman, served as the president of the University of Damascus, which undoubtedly influenced her intellectual pursuits.

Al-Samman’s literary journey was profoundly shaped by personal tragedy; she lost her mother at a very young age. This loss left a significant mark on her life and work, leading her to seek solace and inspiration in literature. She is also distantly related to the renowned poet Nizar Qabbani, whose influence can be seen in her writing style and thematic choices.
