Ghassan Hitto, born in 1963 in Damascus, Syria, is a prominent businessman and politician known for his significant role in the Syrian opposition. Coming from a Kurdish family, he left Syria in 1980 to pursue opportunities in the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen and established a successful career in information technology.
In the wake of the Syrian civil war, Hitto relocated to Turkey in late 2012. His political journey reached a pivotal moment on March 18, 2013, when he was elected as the first head of the interim government formed by the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces. His election was marked by a narrow victory over Assad Mustafa, a former Ba'athist minister.
Despite the challenges he faced, Hitto's tenure as prime minister was brief, as he resigned on July 8, 2013. His leadership during a tumultuous period in Syrian history has left a lasting impact on the opposition's efforts for change.
