Giacomo Matteotti, born on May twenty-second, eighteen eighty-five, in Fratta Polesine, Rovigo, was a prominent Italian socialist and anti-fascist politician. He became a significant opposition leader and served as the secretary of the Unitary Socialist Party (PSU) from nineteen twenty-two to nineteen twenty-four. A dedicated socialist from a young age, Matteotti joined the youth wing of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) in nineteen ninety-eight and later became a full member around nineteen hundred. He graduated in law from the University of Bologna in nineteen oh seven, establishing himself as a lawyer and journalist.
Matteotti's political career began to flourish when he was elected mayor of Villamarzana in nineteen twelve. He also held positions in various municipal councils across Veneto, including deputy mayor of Fratta Polesine. His opposition to World War I led to his internment in Sicily, but he returned to politics and was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the nineteen nineteen general election, where the PSI emerged as the most voted party.
In the subsequent elections, despite the rise of fascist violence, Matteotti was re-elected in nineteen twenty-one. Following a split in the PSI, he aligned with Filippo Turati to form the PSU, advocating for a democratic socialist approach. His criticism of Bolshevism and the authoritarian methods of the fascists set him apart from other socialist factions. In nineteen twenty-four, he led the PSU into the general election, securing a third term.
On May thirtieth, nineteen twenty-four, Matteotti made a bold statement in Parliament, accusing the National Fascist Party of electoral fraud and violence. Just eleven days later, he was kidnapped and murdered by a fascist squad, an act widely seen as a turning point in Mussolini's rise to dictatorship. His assassination sparked outrage and led to the Aventine Secession, where deputies protested against the regime. Today, Matteotti is commemorated as a martyr of the Italian Republic, with numerous places named in his honor.
