Giambattista Vico

Giambattista Vico, born on June twenty-third, sixteen sixty-eight, was a prominent Italian philosopher, sociologist, historian, and jurist during the Italian Enlightenment. He is celebrated for his critical stance against the rise of modern rationalism, particularly the Cartesian analysis and reductionism that he deemed impractical for understanding human life. Vico's work positioned him as an apologist for classical antiquity and the Renaissance humanities, marking him as one of the earliest figures of the Counter-Enlightenment.

Vico's intellectual contributions are profound, particularly his formulation of the Latin aphorism 'Verum esse ipsum factum,' which translates to 'truth is itself something made.' This phrase is recognized as an early example of constructivist epistemology, reflecting his belief in the constructed nature of knowledge. He is also credited with inaugurating the modern field of the philosophy of history, although he did not use the term himself. Instead, he referred to a 'history of philosophy narrated philosophically.'

His magnum opus, 'Scienza Nuova' or 'New Science,' published in seventeen twenty-five, represents a systematic organization of the humanities as a unified science. In this work, Vico explores the historical cycles that govern the rise and fall of societies, providing a framework that continues to influence contemporary thought. Although he was not an historicist, his ideas have garnered interest from historicists like Isaiah Berlin and Hayden White, who have drawn upon his insights in their own explorations of history and philosophy.
